Microsoft stated that USB devices may trigger “inappropriate drive reassignment” issues during the installation of the latest updates. The tech giant warned users that the bug could also affect internal drives. Many Windows 10 Insiders already encounter the following error when attempting to upgrade:

However, if you are still interested in installing the May 2019 Update, you can try a quick workaround. Microsoft recommends that you should restart your PC and launch the update process again after removing USB-based external hard-drives, USB thumb drives or SD cards. Additionally, you also need to make sure that:
Your system drivers are up to date. You turned off your internet connection on your system. You’ll an ISO file to try an offline installation of the above-mentioned update.
Microsoft is currently working on a fix which will hopefully be available in the coming days. Users who are currently enrolled in the Windows Insider program can expect a fix with version 18877. Furthermore, you can analyze the log files so as to get more information about this update error. Notably, the update will only be blocked on devices running the October 2018 Update or April 2018 Update. You can easily upgrade to Windows 10 May 2019 Update if you have an older Windows 10 version on your system. Microsoft first plans to fix the 19H1 upgrade issues before releasing the long-awaited 20H1 update.
