The Big M is taking all the precaution measures to save your Windows 10 machines from update havoc. The company has placed an upgrade block on Intel devices that rely on specific Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) versions. According to Microsoft, this bug can trigger stability issues on some Intel machines. Not only this, but it may also affect iastora.sys –an inbox storage driver. Microsoft explains in a support document:
Upgrade block only for specific driver versions
Microsoft confirmed this critical issue affects all the RST driver versions starting from 15.1.0.1002 to 15.5.2.1053. This is a version-specific bug and all the systems running different driver versions should work fine. Notably, you won’t see Windows 10 May 2019 Update in your Windows Update section if your system is running RST driver versions starting from 15.1.0.1002 to 15.5.2.1053. Additionally, if you attempt to update your system via Update Assistant Tool, you will see an upgrade block message.
A quick workaround
However, if you are running RST version 15.5.2.1054 or later, you can install Windows 10 v1903 on your system. Microsoft recommends that you install 15.9.6.1044 or newer to avoid all potential issues. You need to contact your hardware manufacturer to check for the latest drivers. There might be a case that you can not find the compatible version at the moment. Follow these steps to update outdated drivers in Windows 10 quickly and safely. Alternatively, you should visit Intel’s website to download the latest version of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. It is highly recommended that you reboot your machine to proceed with the upgrade process. Microsoft is working on fixing this issue. We hope that a patch will be available very soon.
