Microsoft first teased the release of Redstone 2 at a Windows 10 event in New York City. At that time, the only date known for the expected release was early 2017. But after a block type in the company’s popular Minecraft title, the acclaimed update will be launching with version number Windows 10 Release 1704 in April.

Features of Windows 10 Creators Update

Until a few weeks ago, rumors about the release date suggested March 2017. Alongside disclosing the official release date, Microsoft is also finalizing the feature set of the Creators Update, among which the biggest is undoubtedly the introduction of the Windows Holographic user interface for Windows 10 VR headsets. Support for VR gaming is definitely going to work in Microsoft’s favor. Gaming clientele will appreciate this latest addition to their favorite OS. Moreover, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer have plans to unveil a Windows 10 compatible VR headset with a price as as low as $299. Bundled with the update is a 3D version of Microsoft Paint, Action Center changes, and a new people bar added to the taskbar. Microsoft has claimed that with the 3D remodeled version of the default paint app, users will have a more artistic experience. For example, they’ll be able to use a Surface Pen to draw directly on the screen for the first time. This makes clear Microsoft’s focus of helping creatives implement 3D work into their projects. Along with these, Microsoft is also introducing a blue light reduction feature similar to f.lux. Then, there are the usual bug and glitch fixes that are to be incorporated in the release ahead of general availability.

Redstone 3

Microsoft is really on a fast track here. Just after finalizing the release date of Redstone 2, the software giant is already undergoing planning phases for the next update. Codenamed Redstone 3, the update is to have an even more refined feature set including an improved design language for the OS. The release process will be carried out gradually — that is, if Microsoft follows their typical methodology. Some regions will receive the update sooner rather than later, which would highlight any potential bugs and risk before the Creators Update causes any widespread trouble. Although, if you want to receive the full update immediately after the launch, you can always choose to go manual.
