In order to combat the speaker’s physical limitation, Microsoft decided to pump up the volume on their future Surface devices with a new patent.
How the patent works
Known as the “Expandable Enclosure For Electronic Device Resonance Box,” a speaker cone and drive magnet are assembled on the outer surface of the device’s enclosure and faced inwards. As explained by Microsoft, this gives the electronic device “the benefit of amplifying audio via the resonance box without adding significantly to the device volume or requiring an auxiliary speaker system.” Using the natural acoustics of the Microsoft Surface’s external enclosure, this patent can clearly improve the speaker quality of thin devices like the Surface Pro series.
